Thom Browne is no stranger to a collaboration. In addition to his own label, he has freshened up the clothing lines Brooks Brothers and Moncler Gamme Bleu with his twisted-prep aesthetic. And while fashion may be his calling card, Browne's latest project features another passion of his (and ours): drinking. The classic whiskey brand Dewar's recruited Browne to create a sophisticated package--titled the "Browne Bag"--perfectly time for holiday gifting, because, lets face it, who doesn't want a bottle of hooch in their stocking?
Last night at Thom held court at Hudson Clearwater in New York's West Village to introduce his latest work, and we were able to pin him down for a quick tete-a-tete. "I liked this project because Dewar's was more interested in a conceptual idea," he said. "Essentially, it's a play on words," he said noting that the bag is not, in fact, brown but rendered in his signature gray with grosgrain handles--another design element he often features in his men's and women's apparel. "I only participate in collaborations if there's a personal connection and my father used to drink Dewar's, so for me this is very nostalgic."
And as for Thom's personal drinking habits? "Well, I have a drink every night. I go to Indochine a lot. I like the ritual of having a drink after work and before dinner," he says but is quick to give advice for drinking like a gentleman. "Obviously, don't drink too much, but enough to have fun."
