Gentlemanly Pursuits: The Cabin Getaway
In the 1955 film All That Heaven Allows, Rock Hudson played Ron Kirby, a nurseryman who, inspired by Henry David Thoreau's book Walden, rejects a world of suburban politics to live in bucolic tranquility. While we're not suggesting you pack up and hibernate, we do recommend taking a cue from Kirby, Thoreau, and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who after three months alone in a cabin in Wisconsin emerged with his album For Emma, Forever Ago) and planning a rustic retreat. What better way to combat the seasonal gloom than to curl up by the fireplace with a great read, a warm blanket, and some quality tunes?
