John Cameron Mitchell to Star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch
John Cameron Mitchell, who along with Stephen Trask created the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will return to the stage as the titular East Geman-trans-punk rocker after Michael C. Hall finishes his turn as Hedwig.
"I am in equal parts thrilled and terrified to be returning to Hedwig," said Mitchell in a statement. "15 years ago she kicked my butt so hard that I quit acting. But like an expertlly face-lifted ex-wife, she's lured me back. The killer new work by Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, and Michael C. Hall have left much larger pumps to fill. Here's hoping I don't need a walker by the end of the run."
John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask premiered the Off-Broadway show back in 1998, with Mitchell playing the lead. He also starred in the show's 2001 film adaptation. This turn on the boards as Hedwig will be Mitchell's first New York stage apparence since starring in the show back in '98. He'll be joined by Lena Hall, who continues with the production as Yitzhak.
Michael C. Hall will take his final curtain call as Hedwig on January 18 and Mitchell will take his first on January 21.
Director Michael Mayer said, "I'm beyond thrilled to work with my dear friend John Cameron Mitchell in recreating his iconic role in our new production. I think his Hedwig has had a date with Broadway for a long time and I can't wait to be there for it."
