Fresh off a part in the critically acclaimed The Fault in Our Stars, comedian Mike Birbiglia has lined up his next role: A guest spot on the third season of Orange Is the New Black. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are no official details about the role or just how many episodes he will be appearing in. But there is plenty of room to speculate.
Knowing that Litchfield is a women's prison, it's safe to assume Birbiglia will not be playing an inmate, which only leaves a few roles for men on the show: a guard or (a free) person in an inmate's life. Given the more soft-spoken nature he displayed in his own film Sleepwalk With Me, the comedian could be playing a current or old love interest.
Additionally, there are several possibilities given the number of backstories that haven't been explored and the departure of two prison guards, Lauren Lapkus' Susan Fischer and Pornstache. (Pablo Schrieber recently revealed that he will not be returning for Season 3 and has instead joined the new HBO series, The Brink.)
As for the upcoming themes, showrunner Jenji Kohan has revealed that season three is "about faith, to a certain extent." Faith and bloodshed -- at least according to Emmy-nominated Natasha Lyonne, who described the third season to People "in three words: So much bloodshed."
