We are proud to join the millions of Americans participating in GLAAD's Spirit Day 2011 who stand behind LGBT youth in support and remember those who have tragically taken their own lives because of anti-gay bullying.
For Spirit Day, October 20, OUT, along with sibling sites Advocate, Gay.net, and SheWired, are displaying special purple logos on our social media pages.
Show your support on October 20 for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and speak out against bullying by wearing purple.
Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy -- participants are asked to simply "go purple" on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.
How can you participate? Easy! Show your support by going purple on Facebook, Twitter and everywhere else online, with a simple click of the mouse:
1. Go purple online TODAY: Visit the Spirit Day page and change their Facebook and Twitter photos starting today.
2. On Twitter? RT @glaad: End anti-LGBT bullying - Make your profile pic purple for #SpiritDay at https://glaad.org/spiritday #LGBT
You can alsodownload the free app to purple all your photos, then Tweet your purple pics with the tag #SpiritDay
3. Wear purple on Spirit Day: Tell your friends to join you and wear purple on Thursday, October 20, for Spirit Day.
And, don't forget to share the support for #SpiritDay 2011 everywhere you frequent online:
