Dockers Introduces New Slim Fit Khakis, Just in Time for Summer

We know what you're thinking -- that khakis aren't cool. While jeans have somehow maintained a reputation of being perennially hip, and unendingly, effortlessly soigne, khakis have unjustly accrued the status of denim's fussier, boxier, less-cool younger cousin. But recently our junior fashion editor Brent Coover has been parading around the office in some summer-friendly khakis with a slim, tapered fit (in blindingly saturated, quirky hues like fire-y red, chalky white, and deep-sea blue, no less), so we cornered him to see who made his latest score. We were convinced that these had to be the magic of some high-end minded designer, reclaiming the forgotten chino for the fashionable few -- cooler khakis but at Michael Bastian or Rag & Bone prices. Yet upon closer inspection, we discovered that these were the byproduct of the grand-daddy of chinos, Dockers. Following the success of their modern wader fit, Dockers -- who is owned by denim-mainstay Levis -- made a tweak here and a tug there and released their latest unveiling: The SF Taper. Inspired by the more tailored, leaner fit that men favor in their jeans, Dockers mimicked this with an updated alternative that sits low on the waist, stays lean in the leg and narrows every so slightly at the foot opening. Add to this the streamlined and slanted pockets and the palatable asking price starting around $50 and you can see why this workweek standby has been given a second reprieve in the inscrutable eyes of fashion. The new trousers have already been spotted on the likes of Robert Pattison and Alexander Skarsgard (for some reason the vampires have been the first to catch wind of these new britches), so it would seem that guys are being wooed away from their beloved denim and back on board the khaki train with these new and improved trousers. Full disclosure: we have been, too.
