Teaming up with the boys behind cult label Nice Collective, Michael Martin has debuted the first collection for the collaborative new menswear label, Martin of San Francisco. Clean, structured lines and understated designs merge to create a thought-provoking aesthetic, inspired by cycling culture. In line with Nice Collective's tradition of throwing in hidden details, Martin--the creator of cycling brand and fixed-gear fanatics crew Mash SF--focuses on those that serve some sort of purpose for the wearer, such as elastic pulls in the cuff for keeping the sleeves rolled, a nylon windbreaker made to fold in on itself and into it's own stowaway pocket, and leather belts with concealed reflective elements for night riding. Grey, black, white, and navy make up the color palette for the season, with a couple of gingham and pinstripe prints thrown into the solid-heavy mix.
While the San Francisco-based collection was engineered with the intention of serving cyclists, the line is visually appealing for both bikers and walkers alike. The sophisticated collection of hooded sweaters, cotton button-ups, twill pants, and leather accessories will be available for fall 2009 at Odin New York (199 Lafayette St., 212-966-0026, odinnewyork.com) and Jake (939 N. Rush St., 312-664-5553, shopjake.com).
