27 artist worked together on the star-studded track to kick off the BBC’s new music initiative.

PBS should take note: When its British counterpart, the BBC, sets out to do something, it does it big.

To launch the BBC's new music initiative, BBC Music, the public service broadcaster brought together 27 of the biggest names in music to collaborate on a rendition of The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows."

Sir Elton John, Sam Smith, Pharrell Williams, Emeli Sande, Lorde, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Wonder, Queen guitarist Brian May, One Direction, Paloma Faith, the Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl, and more worked together on the track, which will be released to benefit the UK charity, Children in Need.

The premieres of the video and song were something of a global event, as the BBC aired it on all but one of its platforms, which span television, radio, and the Internet.

While I can't say for certain why the BBC choose a Beach Boys song, my best guess would be that the track's featured in Love Actually.

We've got the full list of all involved here.
