Whether it's subtle undertones or blatant softcore porn, here are 13 of our favorite homoerotic horrors
Halloween is just around the corner. Whether you plan to go as a Dickie Dollar Scholar or a Chanel, there's no shortage of decadence and debauchery. But if you're looking for something a little more low-key, grab the bae and the popcorn.
Homoerotic horror is nothing new. With indie flicks like The Brotherhood, Into the Lion's Den, and any of the 1313 films, there's plenty honorable mentions. Whether it's subtle undertones or blatant softcore porn, here are 13 of our favorite homoerotic horrors:
1. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE (1985)
Other than the obvious homosexual tension of Freddy Krueger being after a teenage boy's body, this movie is filled to the brim with gay undertones. Jesse's pseudo friendship with the hot jock that can't keep his shirt on for most of the film is just an appetizer. The fun starts when Jesse finds his dominant gym coach is actually a dominant leather daddy. The bondage/shower scene would have been a fantasy come true for most teenage boys... you know, if it weren't for the whole imminent murder thing.
2. THE LOST BOYS (1987)
It's a wonder how the bromance between Corey Feldman and Corey Haim is not the most homoerotic relationship in this film. Let's leave that to Kiefer Sutherland and his quest to convert Jason Patric... To joining his vampire gang, not a George Michael cover band as it would appear.
3. THE FORSAKEN (2001)
Much like the gay nightlife etiquette of the time, this film mostly did away with sleeves. And it's a good thing they did, because what better way to enjoy some of our favorite '90s heartthrobs like Kerr Smith (Dawson's Creek), Brendan Fehr (Roswell), and Johnathon Schaech (That Thing You Do)? Have Schaech chase them around the country, trying to suck them dry. He's a vampire... Get your mind out of the gutter.
4. AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000)
Patrick Bateman's morning routine is basically a Perry Ellis underwear campaign video by itself. But the best part is when the undies come off. I think Bateman would agree, as he seemed more in love with his own body than the prostitutes he hired as background in his homemade snuff porn.
5. THE COVENANT (2006)
Imagine The Craft was recast with Abercrombie models and set in a boarding school. What movie about boys at a boarding school hasn't had at least a hint of insinuated homosexuality? Throw in a shirtless locker room brawl and teenage boys in speedos, and you practically have a Randy Blue video. Let's not forget about twink Taylor Kitsch burning a hole into the screen.
6. SCREAM (1996)
What would have happened if Billy and Stu had killed off Sidney? They said they wanted to plan the sequel, but I have a feeling they would have rode off into the sunset together now that their girlfriends are dead. I mean their friendship did inspire Ray and Bobby's murderous gay fling in the horror parody, Scary Movie.
7. FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)
In another light, this could be seen as a homophobic propaganda film. Two evil men move into the neighborhood and try to convert teenage boys (including future gay porn star, Stephen Geoffreys). But add vampires into the mix, and it's a pretty common plot within the horror genre.
8. INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994)
Before Bella and Edward, there was Louis and Lestat. It's safe to say that Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were responsible for all of our pre-pubescent vampire fantasies. Theirs is a love as old as the vampire genre itself.
9. JEEPERS CREEPERS II (2003)
Apparently Justin Long wasn't enough for this winged monster. Once he had a taste of that boy flesh, he just wanted more. And luckily, there was a bus full of it just waiting to be picked off. Nothing screams oppressed homosexuality like a bunch of shirtless jocks lying out on top of a school bus and taking group pisses (plus borderline watersports).
10. PORNOGRAPHY: A THRILLER (2009)
Set against the backdrop of the gay porn industry, this psychological thriller follows two different gay men as they become obsessed with the disappearance of an adult film star. Their search for answers leads them to dangerous territory, blurring the lines between sexy and scary. This movie takes the subtle homoerotic elements of some of your favorite horror films and makes it a key storytelling device.
11. CREEP (2014)
In this cat-and-mouse found footage thriller, Josef (Mark Duplass) hires Aaron (Patrick Brice) to film him for a day while he prepares to die of cancer. Shortly after meeting, Josef gets naked to have Aaron film him during "tubby time." A little later, he takes him to a spring in the shape of a heart for a little dip. If this didn't tip Aaron off that he might have a new admirer, he soon receives a stuffed bear and a locket in the mail. Without giving too much away, let's just say Josef's intentions aren't quite what they seem.
12. THE HITCHER (1986)
Other than the all-around creepy stares that hitchhiker, John (Rutger Hauer) keeps shooting at Jim (C. Thomas Howell) after getting a ride from him, there's also the aggressive knee grabbing that makes us think John was probably spending some time at rest stops in between hitching rides. At a traffic block, John puts a knife to Jim's groin so he doesn't talk to the police. It's cool though; they just assume he's giving him a handjob. John even kills Jim's girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh) in what can only be considered jealousy.
13. HELLBENT (2004)
It was about time somebody gave us a halfway decent gay homage to the slasher genre. After murdering a gay couple in the woods, a psycho in a devil mask (and not much else) gives new meaning to the term, "giving head." The next night, he stalks four friends as they celebrate Halloween in West Hollywood. Something tells me this guy has some serious oppressed sexuality issues.
