Lil Nas X has been granted entry into a mental health diversion program, which opens a pathway to the clearing of assault charges.
The "Old Town Road" singer appeared Monday in a Los Angeles courtroom, where a judge found his behavior last August — when he was arrested for alleged battery of police officers — was "aberrant from his normal conduct," Rolling Stone reports.
The case will be dismissed if the gay musician completes a two-year treatment program — and avoids possession of weapons or threatening of violence during this time.
"When treated, he is much better off, and society is much better off," Judge Alan Schneider said of Lil Nas X, who he observed “appears to be doing very well."
"I’m thankful. Just very thankful," Lil Nas X told Rolling Stone after the court appearance. "It could have been much worse."
The 26-year-old told reporters after the hearing that he was "just going through the flow of life."
"I’m here, baby," he added when asked about the treatment program.
The “Montero” rapper was arrested on August 21, 2025, after he was seen on video walking in traffic on Ventura Boulevard wearing only his underwear. Afterward, prosecutors claimed that Lil Nas X assaulted three police officers who were trying to take him into custody. He pled not guilty and faced the possibility of five years in prison.
At the Monday hearing, Lil Nas X's attorney shared that her client had voluntarily checked himself into an Arizona rehabilitation following the "humiliating" incident and received nearly two months of inpatient care. She said he has been going through a "pretty rigorous mental health regimen" since then.
