Congratulations to Da Brat and her wife, Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart!
The happy couple, who got married on February 2 of last year, made the happy announcement in People magazine earlier today that they are expecting their first child. They also shared pictures of Da Brat’s pregnant belly.
Da Brat, whose real name Shawntae Harris-Dupart, revealed to People that getting pregnant has “been quite a journey” and admits that it started as a joke about the couple launching a new product together through Dupart’s Kaleidoscope Hair Products.
“It started as a joke, we were like, ‘We're extending our family!’” she said about the marketing for the collaboration. “But then we got a huge response. It was like, ‘Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!’”
She also admitted that before this, she never had planned on having kids before her relationship with Dupart.
“I never thought I was going to have kids,” she said. “I just thought it wasn't in the cards for me. I've had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn't get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn't going to happen for me.”
But marrying her wife made her rethink things. “I was like, ‘I want a little me with you.’ Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally,” she told People.
It wasn’t an easy journey, as both women had dealt with health complications, and then suffered a miscarriage. But now, Da Brat is pregnant again, and healthily in her second trimester.
“It’s just a blessing,” she said. “I’m excited!”
Da Brat, who has two Billboard top ten hits and two Grammy nominations, came out in 2020 when she announced her relationship with Dupart. “I have never experienced this feeling. It's so overwhelming that often I find myself in a daze hoping to never get pinched to see if it's real so I can live in this dream forever,” she said.
Now, she gets to live that dream forever, and gets to add a child to the dream.
