Elton John Defends Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Gay icon Elton John is coming to the defense of our Black princess, Meghan Markle, and her husband.

The legendary musician and activist took to social media to voice support for the royal couple after British tabloids began criticising their family vacation for contradicting the couple's conservation efforts.

"I am deeply distressed by today's distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's private stay at my home in Nice last week," the "Rocket Man" singer tweeted. "Prince Harry's Mother, Diana Princess of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana's untimely death."

News broke days ago of the couple's vacation to the south of France with their 3-month-old son, Archie. But at the time, headlines focused on their use of a private jet to make the trip -- just days after returning from another trip to Ibiza to celebrate Markle's 38th birthday. Some believed the trips to be a contradiction to the couple's positions on protecting the environment.

"'Eco-warriors' Meghan Markle and Prince Harry fly on private jet again to France after gas-guzzling Ibiza trip," The Sun said, for example.

But Elton John, who performed at Princess Di's 1997 funeral and attended Harry and Meghan's wedding last year before performing at their reception, isn't letting these criticisms go unchecked. He revealed that not only did he provide his own jet to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex but that the plane was made carbon neutral. According to People, this process "typically involves calculating how much a flight generates in greenhouse gas emissions and financially contributing to a project that aims to reduce emissions by that same amount."

"After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home," he tweeted. "To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry's commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint(tm)."

"I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan's commitment to charity," he continued, "and I'm calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis."

And there it is then! But Markle, for one, is probably used to the foolish commentary. After all, she's faced continuous racist attacks since becoming part of the Royal Family.
