When Senator Elizabeth Warren was interrupted last month while reading the words of Coretta Scott King on the Senate floor, Mitch McConnell later commented: "She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." And since then, in a delectable move of turning oppression against oppressors, "she persisted" has become a rallying cry for women speaking out against the unfair aspects of the status quo.
Now, Chelsea Clinton has borrowed the phrase as the title for her upcoming children's book, where she showcase the lives of 13 inspirational women from American history who, when faced with near insurmountable odds, persevered to be rewarded with great achievement. The included women are Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Nellie Bly, Maria Tallchief, Claudette Colvin, Clara Lemlich, Ruby Bridges, Margaret Chase Smith, Sally Ride, Florence Griffith Joyner, Oprah Winfrey, and Sonia Sotomayor.
\u201cPersistence has changed the course of history - I'm so excited to share stories of girls & women who didn't take no for answer on May 30th!\u201d— Chelsea Clinton (@Chelsea Clinton) 1489672909
"I wrote this book for everyone who's ever wanted to speak up but has been told to quiet down, for everyone who's ever been made to feel less than," Clinton said in a statement toEW. "The 13 women in She Persisted all overcame adversity to help shape our country - sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience. I want to send a message to young readers around the country - and the world - that persistence is power." The book, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger, releases May 30.
