The Gatsby Hair

Complete your 1920s look with Leonardo DiCaprio's hairdo in 'The Great Gatsby'

We've been obsessing a little bit over the release of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, which opens today. After showing you how to dress like Gatsby (see here and here), we're shifting our focus to hair.

I had a massive crush on Leonardo DiCaprio in his blonde, flowy hair days (remember Romeo + Juliet and Titanic?) so it's a pleasure to see him coming back to a similar style in Gatsby. To achieve this slick '20s 'do, make sure you keep your hair long enough: Your bangs should almost reach the level of your eyes. Ask your barber to keep the back and the sides neatly faded.

Because you're trying to achieve a silk-smooth finish, you need to make sure your hair is squeaky-clean. Use eShave Triple Action Shampoo ($30, 8oz) to get rid of any residue, and follow with Malin+Goetz Cilantro Conditioner ($22, 8oz): Both are very light-weight products that will prevent your hair from looking greasy.

To style, mix a dab of of Short Sexy Hard Up Holding Gel ($17,95, 5.1oz) on towel-dried hair with a pea-size amount of Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Paste ($16.95, 1.8oz) -- the latter will give you that polished effect and help you create a slight curl, just like Gatsby's. Use a fine-toothed comb to set the hair apart. Allow your hair to dry naturally. To keep everything in place, spray a firm-holding hairspray (optional, if you're going for the off-day Gatsby look).

If you like extra-shine in the style of Gatsby's buddy Nick Carraway (played by Tobey Maguire in the movie), swap the gel for Bumble & Bumble Sumowax ($27, 1.5oz), an easily washable, very resistant pomade with a high gloss. For this one, style your bangs into a tight pompadour with your comb, and simply let dry.

That should get you all set for your Roaring Twenties throw-back party, and if all fails, you can always wear a boater hat.
