New York City Declares 'Bowie Day' on January 20

NYC Bowie Day

It's official: The Thin White Duke gets his dedicated day in NYC

New York City has official declared January 20 "David Bowie Day" in honor of the late musician.

The announcement was made on Bowie's Facebook page. Mayor Bill de Blasio is scheduled to endorse the statement at the curtain call of Lazarus, the Off-Broadway musical co-produced by Bowie before his death.

New York follows in the footsteps of Chicago, which was the first city to declare a "Bowie Day" on September 23, back in 2014.

Bowie was a New York resident for the last 20 years of his life. Following his death on January 10, fans left flowers and personal tributes outside of his SoHo apartment, where he settled with his wife, Iman, in 1999.

Bowie topped the charts posthumously last week with Blackstar, his final album, which the Official Chart Company has revealed is currently over 28,000 sales ahead Adele's 25.
