The Respect for Marriage Act inspired some love stories!

On Tuesday, December 13, President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, securing marriage equality for same-sex and interracial couples as the law of the land.

LGBTQ+ folks from across the country were in attendance, including celebrities like Drag Race star Brita Filter and Lesbian Jesus Hayley Kiyoko.

Taylor Small was also in attendance. Small became Vermont's first transgender legislator in 2020 after winning a spot in the state's House of Representatives. Today, she is a leading voice of LGBTQ+ advocacy - and she's engaged!

She first spoke on social media about the momentous event yesterday with a photo of her and her partner. "Dear Mr. President, thank you for inviting us to witness herstory in the making and, of course, for respecting marriage," she wrote. "To those who have been working tirelessly on the front lines for decades to bring us to this moment of celebration, I commit to making this one of many moments to come."

Just a day later, Small announced that the two actually got engaged on the White House front lawn, moments after Biden signed the act.

"We're officially enGAYged!" she celebrated. "After @potus signed the #RespectForMarriageAct my amazing partner of almost 4 years, Carsen, asked me to marry him on the South Lawn of the @whitehouse. I, of course, said yes and could not think of a more fitting way to celebrate this moment in herstory."

She tenderly added, "I love you, Carsen."

We love love and send the couple a big congratulations!
