In September, Florida Democrat and one-time candidate for governor Andrew Gillum came out as bisexual. For that moment, Gillum went on The Tamron Hall show for his first interview since his widely-discussed scandal that involved drugs, a sex worker, and accusations of infidelity. The two incidents — the interview and the scandal — were some six months a part, and now five months later Gillum has opened up again about the moment in a new GQ magazine feature.
According to Gillum and his wife R. Jai Gillum, there was turmoil before the night in question. Though the pair had already had a conversation about Andrew's relationship much earlier in the relationship — he considered coming out before running for mayor in 2014 but was told not to by an advisor and by his wife — the run for governor put a strain on the marriage. While Gillum was crisscrossing around the state, his wife was pregnant with their third child. His loss, by just 32,000 votes caused a rift that saw Gillum turn to drinking while packing his schedule.
On March 12, Gillum was supposed to officiate a wedding in Miami Beach. He spent the day drinking and "at some point in the early evening, he decided to meet up with Travis Dyson." The two met at the Mondrian South Beach.
“He offers me something to drink.… I’m not really sure, like, what it is and what’s in it because I’m already kind of [drunk].… The last memory that I have is sitting up drinking,” Gillum told GQ. “Because I didn’t take a drug test until two or three days later, I don’t know if there was something in my drink. But all I know is, I’m knocked out. At the point that I come back present, it’s like 11 at night and I’m in the bathroom. I don’t have any clothes on. I have no idea why. And I’m there with like five, six police officers.” He went on to say he did not knowingly consume drugs and didn't know that anyone had taking photos of him.
“So at this point I’m like, ‘This is set up,'" he said, while acknowledging he should have never been in the hotel room to begin with. But Dyson recalls a different story.
According to him, the pair first began to speak on Grindr, a week or two prior and had met up "multiple times for paid sexual encounters." According to him, Gillum took G and passed out, likely as it mixed with the alcohol in Gillum's system. According to Dyson, the pair both had taken G on multiple occasions together. The third man who was found at the scene, was allegedly another client who had a later appointment but found both of them in the hotel room overdosing and called the police.
Dyson said he has been impacted by the scandal as well having broken off his engagement, withdrawn from nursing school, and turned to OnlyFans for an income.
"What precisely happened that night remains unclear," Wesley Lowery wrote for GQ. "After learning that I had contacted Dyson for comment, the Gillums canceled our scheduled follow-up interviews and declined to respond on the record to Dyson’s version of events."
