Out Fashion Vanguard Progress Report #2: Andrew Morrison

Andrew FVA Progress Report 2

FVA finalist Andrew Morrison shares the second phase of his progress in the competition.

Out is searching for the next great talent on the cutting edge of fashion. Earlier this year, we asked our readers, to submit their designs and sketches using #OUTFashionVanguard. Now, we have three eager finalists preparing their designs to show the world why they deserve the title of Out Fashion Vanguard at the very first FVA event on March 30.

Here's a phase two update from finalist Andew Morrison, an NYC-based, FIT graduate who creates modern-day "menswear" meant for any gender.

With the event just a week away, tell us how you are feeling?

I'm feeling really good! I'm very close to the finished piece, but still in the process of making those last minute alterations to my final look. With the event approaching this week, I'm currently deciding on which accessories from my latest collection to pack for the event.

How do you remain calm and focused while working under pressure?

The quickest way for me to calm myself and maintain my focus is by listening to classical music. The genre puts my mind at ease, in a place where I don't over think, I just do. I am big into classical scores composed for motion pictures. One of my all-time favorites is Dario Marianelli's soundtrack for Ian McEwan's Atonement directed by Joe Wright.

What has been the most challenging part in bringing your design to life?

The hardest part for me was deciding which colors and textures to choose for each piece. Fabric is obviously such a huge part of the process and it was very important to me to maintain my brand's aesthetic when designing into this look.

How has your vision for this piece changed or developed over time?

I spent a lot of my time deciding on whether I should go with a vest, a coat, or a jumpsuit. In the end, I am really happy with my final decision.

How is your piece different or similar to what you have created before?

My design for the FVA competition is quite similar to some other pieces designed for my collection. I designed the look with a formal evening event in mind, which is very similar to how I've approached some of my previous collections.

Do you have any expectations for the actual event?

I am trying to not have too many expectations for the FVA event. I prefer to focus on being grateful for the opportunity and to really enjoy the process.

Name a celebrity or fashion icon you hope to meet while in Hollywood, attending the Out Fashion Vanguard Awards.

It would be a dream come true to have a chat with Alan Cumming. I presume his stories to be nothing short of amazing! I am also really into the musician Lo-Fang right now, so the chance to meet him would be fantastic.

Check in on Out's other two Fashion Vanguard Finalists, Kim Mesches and Marcel Coleman Jr., and how they're progressing in the competition. More updates to come this week!
