After turning heads with the queer kiss-laden video for their song "Kiss Like A Woman" earlier this year, MONA decided it was time to slow the track down and give it an infusion of soul. Thus was born the doo wop version. Still as topical as its original mid-tempo predecessor, this new version feels a bit more mature and makes it easier for listeners to relate and attach themselves to the lyrics.
"It does feel older for some reason," said Nick Brown of MONA. "It's the same soul but kind of depends on how many drinks you're in at karaoke. It's that kind of vibe."
Like the track, the video for the doo wop version, which features non-binary model Mads Paige on vocals, is an understated affair. Paige, who starred in the video for the original version of the song, and Brown are caught behind the scenes during the recording process on and away from the mic.
"There was a playfulness and mischief to it," Brown said of Paige's Instagram page, which led him to the model in the first place. That rascally spirit was one of the feelings he wanted to infuse into the song's reimagining.
"In our book everyone deserves respect and love, and it's that kind of proclamation without being preachy," said Brown. "It's kind of a feel good vibe and I just hope people enjoy it." Watch, below.
