An 18-year-old lesbian, who was kicked out of her house for attending a Black Lives Matter rally, outed her parents who were featured prominently on video at the protests turned violent insurrection in the nation's capital last week. According to a report in Buzzfeed, Helena Duke posted a series of tweets outing her parents for their participation and hateful beliefs.
"Hi this is the liberal lesbian of the family who has been kicked out multiple times for her views and for going to BLM protests," Duke tweeted, listing the names of her parents and uncle who appeared on video.
\u201cHi this is the liberal lesbian of the family who has been kicked out multiple times for her views and for going to BLM protests to care what happens to me so: \nMom: Therese Duke\nUncle: Richard Lorenz\nAunt: Annie Lorenz\u201d— Helena Duke (@Helena Duke) 1610048548
Duke explained to Buzzfeed that a transformation took place in her mother's political and ideological views following Trump's election in 2016.
"Before President Trump was elected, she was a Democrat for the majority of her life," Duke explained. "And then, I don't know what happened. Something switched in her brain, and she went through a very dramatic change to very far right."
According to Duke, her mother took issue with the largely peaceful Black Lives Matter protests over the summer. She told Buzzfeed her mother called the civil rights group a "violent organization and they would be inciting violence." Duke said she was kicked out of the house for her attendance at a BLM protest.
"I always felt almost heartbroken over how they viewed the world and how skewed it was and how they wouldn't allow me to express my views," she recalled. "But showing that they can act in such a horrible way is just really appalling to me."
Public outrage has grown over the storming of the nation's capital, and many have followed Duke's example and taken to social media to identify those involved in the illegal riots -- CNN's Don Lemon has called those involved "the biggest snowflakes," as well as "cowards." One Instagram account, titled HomeGrownTerrorists, posts pictures of those who were in attendance, asking for the public's help in identifying them. It amassed over 159,000 followers in its first 48 hours, is at 318,000 now and is continuing to grow rapidly.
In the videos that Duke posted, her mother is at BLM Plaza in Washiongton D.C., the day before the insurrection according to reports. There, an unidentified Black woman seems to be badgered by a mob of Trump supporters. The girl begins to video tape and Duke's mother appears to swipe at the phone. The Black woman then punches the mother in the face, who begins to bleed.
Duke, for her part, is left alone to ponder the failures of her parents.
"I am honestly very disappointed to have to be part of this family that is so...just, very not welcoming or supportive," she lamented. "I don't feel safe being part of this family."
