Chelsea Manning has released a statement to Buzzfeed confirming that she will be undergoing gender-transition surgery while imprisoned.
Manning publicly declared that she identifies as female shortly after being dishonorably discharged and convicted of espionage. The former Army intelligence officer is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence at Fort Leavenworth in Kentucky.
"I am unendingly relieved that the military is finally doing the right thing," Manning said in the letter. "I applaud them for that. This is all that I wanted--for them to let me be me."
The decision comes after recommendations from Manning's psychologist and a suicide attempt in early July.
Manning recently ended her hunger strike protesting the "high-tech bullying" that she's received from the military.
The military has yet to publicly confirm Manning's treatment.
