Mississippi Governor Takes Fight for Anti-LGBT State Law to the Next Level

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant hasn’t given up his fight for HB 1523, the “religious freedom law” that, if enacted, could be one of the worst anti-LGBT laws in the country.

The law was struck down this summer by a federal district judge who said that the legislation would lead to unfair treatment of LGBTs in the state.

The law allows for businesses and private citizens to refuse goods and services if three key beliefs are challenged: marriage is between men and women. Sex should only occur in such a marriage. And a person’s gender is determined at birth.

When the state’s Attorney General Jim Hood refused to appeal the law, Bryant sought out private attorneys to take the case to federal appeals court.
