Former GOProud Founder Jimmy LaSalvia Explains Why He Left the Republican Party

Jimmy LaSalvia

‘I came to see that there’s a segment of the Right who just aren’t comfortable with people who aren’t like themselves.’

Jimmy LaSalvia, the founder of now defunct gay conservative group GOProud, famously left the Republican Party in 2014. His reason? "The tolerance of bigotry in the GOP."

LaSalvia's just written a book, No Hope: Why I Left the Republican Party (and You Should Too), and appeared on Reason.com to discuss the book, the current state of the GOP, and why young conservatives should follow his lead.

LaSalvia said he wanted to help the Republican party evolve on gay issues as the country grew more and more progressive, but "there's a segment of the party that wants to keep the Republicans in the past."

"I came to see that there's a segment of the Right who just aren't comfortable with people who aren't like themselves. In our new modern, multi-cultural reality, that makes that coalition untenable for most Americans. So if the purpose of political parties is to win elections, and the ultimate prize is the White House, I don't think that coalition has the ability to win."

LaSalvia then goes on to lament the state of Breitbart and throws mad shade at Fox News.
