“My life’s become a motherf*cking romantic comedy – and it’s PG-13!”
When every romantic comedy trope has been used ad nauseum - the sassy gay friend, the unlikely romantic pairing, the flash mobs - what's left to do? Go meta, obviously.
In the new trailer for Isn't It Romantic, Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is as cynical and jaded as a New Yorker can get. Told from a young age that magical happy endings don't happen for girls that look like her, Natalie grows up with a hefty amount of resentment for romantic comedies. Then, after a subway mugging gone wrong, she gets knocked unconscious and wakes up in one.
Uncommonly attractive doctor greeting you after head trauma? Check. Absurdly spacious New York City apartment with equally absurdly spacious walk-in closet? Check. Problematic cliche gay sidekick? Gurl, check.
But with all the benefits of living life as a rom-com protagonist come the drawbacks. Not only is Natalie's (presumed) brain swelling-induced rom-com world rated PG-13, meaning she can't say "fuck," she also can't consummate things with her love interest, Blake (Liam Hemsworth). Instead she's destined to go from making out and dry-humping to the morning after with no actual sexual payoff whenever things get heated. Now it seems like the only way out is to find the happily ever after she's convinced she'd never get. Watch, below.
