Charlize Theron 'Loved' Her Lesbian Sex Scene in Atomic Blonde

Charlize Theron doesn't play your typical "girl in a superhero movie" in the upcoming Atomic Blonde. For starters, she's the hero, not the hot supporting character in need of rescuing. But what's more, she's playing more of a Deadpool than a Captain America--she swears a lot, gets bruised up pretty badly, and has sex whenever and with whomever she wants. In this case, that includes a hot French operative who happens to be another woman.

"I just loved it," Theron told Varietyof her lesbian sex scene. "For so many reasons: My frustration of how that community is represented in cinema, or lack thereof. And also, it made perfect sense. It just suited her. It just felt there was a way through that relationship and the fact that it was a same-sex relationship to show a woman not having to fall in love, which is one of those female tropes. 'It's a woman; she better fall in love--otherwise, she's a whore!'"

Theron actually was a key player in developing that aspect of the story with screenwriter Kurt Johnstad. "It's one of my most proudest parts of the development, when we came up with that," she said. "And then finding Sofia, that was a slam dunk. There's something about her that's so broken and vulnerable. It works."
