In Saint Laurent, director Bertrand Bonello keenly illustrates his subject's masterful way with clothing, such as when the designer makes over a woman's whole look and mood with the subtlest of details (tousled hair plus new belt equals a new woman). But while you'll be wowed by the film's duds, its real draw is its studs: the triumvirate of Gaspard Ulliel as YSL, Jeremie Renier as his longtime partner Pierre Berge, and Louis Garrel as his irresistibly toxic lover Jacques de Bascher.
When Ulliel's Saint Laurent isn't traipsing around full frontal before slipping between the sheets with Berge, he's licking drugs off Bascher's tongue and admiring his orgy-ready stirrup chair. "My misfortune is there's no competition," Saint Laurent says to the woman he makes over, who lauds him as fashion's best. When it comes to Saint Laurent's criminally hot cast, though, we must beg to differ.
Saint Laurent is in select cinemas May 8. Watch the trailer here.
