Get the latest tea on JoJo Siwa’s new era.

There comes a point in every child star’s career when they have to figure out how to transition from teeny bopping around to becoming a more adult artist who’s taken seriously by the industry. JoJo Siwa is seemingly hoping that her current rebranding era — with the upcoming “Karma” single — is going to draw comparisons to Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz era.

Siwa has been doing a lot of different things in the last few years. Since becoming a breakout cast member on Dance Moms, she’s pursued different ventures in acting, singing, touring, having her own reality show, and even judging existing reality shows. When it comes to her personal life, Siwa came out as gay and kept fans up to date through social media in regard to her first few girlfriends.

As of 2024, it appears that Siwa has circled back to resetting her music career. She’s been releasing a few bops since 2016 (one was literally called “Bop!”). But on the cusp of turning 21, she’s eager to rebrand herself as a musician with the release of a new song called “Karma.”

While attending the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday, Apr. 1, Siwa donned an outfit that looked like it was intended to represent her “grown-up” attitude and this next chapter of her career. She also spoke to Access Hollywood about her appreciation for Miley Cyrus’s rebranding strategies with Bangerz, admitting she would love to have a similar trajectory.

“She is my number one idol,” Siwa said. “I was like, I want to do what she did with Bangerz. I want to have that moment. And I mean, look, I’m flattered that the world even can compare that. That’s crazy to me.”

Bangerz was released when Cyrus was around the same age as Siwa is now. It was her first post-Hannah Montana project in music, and it kicked off a lot of controversy with the “Wrecking Ball” music video. General audiences — who were used to the Hannah Montana actress — didn’t shy away from slut-shaming and declaring that Cyrus was a bad role model for her young fans. You know, the usual conservative backlash that keeps on going while just slightly changing targets.

Nonetheless, it was very clear that Cyrus wanted to forge her own path. She completely disregarded the critics, and did so with a bold and clear move right out of the gate. That seems to be Siwa’s intention as well, but some fans have thoughts and feelings about how things are going so far.

In all fairness to Siwa, people criticized the hell out of Cyrus during her own Bangerz moment. She got similar comments, was equally not taken seriously, and drew backlash for basically anything she wore or said during that period of time. So we hope that Siwa is aware of those layers and can prove everyone wrong — going on to have a highly successful, serious, and edgy rebrand starting this month.
