The pair reportedly have the first same-sex kiss of a Marvel film.
It was big news when rumors start to break that Marvel would truly, finally get a gay superhero. Slowly by slowly more details have emerged about the upcoming The Eternals film, and been confirmed by Marvel itself. So far we know that Brian Tyree Henry, who is playing Phastos in the film, will be the first gay Marvel superhero with an onscreen love interest. He's set to be married with a child, and all of this is to be depicted on screen -- big budget films like this sometimes write things into lines but don't give us the money shot of ever seeing it. But now we've got even more information.
In a new interview Haaz Sleiman has revealed that he is the husband in the film.
"I just shot a Marvel film with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals," Sleiman told New Now Next in a recent interview. "I'm married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child." Wow, Hollywood's first openly total bottom, getting that big screen time, playing the husband of Marvel's first gay superhero in a big-screen project. We love to see it! But, there's more.
According to Sleiman, the pair also give us Marvel's first same-sex kiss.
"It's a beautiful, very moving kiss," Sleiman said. "Everyone cried on set. For me it's very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it's important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we're always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to connect on that human part."
Two men of color, kissing onscreen in a Marvel film, raising children, and one is a superhero? I could not believe
Let's just make sure none of this is left on the cutting room floor.
The Eternals is expected in theaters November 2020.
