With the recent legal decision that allowed same-sex marriages to begin to take place Monday, October 21, that meant that Newark mayor Cory Booker (and newly elected Senator and star politican for the state) was able to marry his first same-sex couple legally.
The Daily Show featured the ceremony, and it's a good, good time.
In the clip, Booker asks the couple: "Do you wish to be joined in marriage?"
They answer: "Yes."
Booker, clearly excited, says: "And I wish to join you...not in marriage, but to join you together... you got it."
Jon Stewart: "Getting weird..."
After he pronounces them legal spouses, he says they can kiss: "All RIGHT!"
Yeah, OK, he was clearly excited.
Stewart: "Getting weirder..."
Booker: "You may hug your spouse. And you may hug your mayor!"
Stewart: "Leave them alone! This is not about you...And if you think that was weird, you should have seen what happened during their first dance."
Before you start to think, Does this mean Cory Booker is actually a gay man? Fuggedaboutit. Even Rachel Maddow discussed it on-air, saying he was not gay. And why would she lie about a closeted man? We think it's just that Booker is a political goober--and he clearly likes wielding his ceremonial powers with glee. Watch out Washington. Once Booker's in the Beltway, all bets are off.
