Though they made the decision before the Supreme Court struck down DOMA, the Seattle Mariners announced today that they will fly the LGBT flag at their game against the Cubs on Sunday.
"We're part of this community. Our fans are a reflection of our community. We thought this was an appropriate gesture on a day that is very meaningful to the LGBT community," said spokeswoman Rebecca Hale in the team's statement, a statement that speaks volumes about how far the wide world of sports has come on LGBT people. No longer are "they," they gays, simply just another community that is integrated into a larger one, often begrudgingly, but the Mariners are saying they're part of the LGBT community, as well. It's worth noting that all of Seattle's major teams have recorded "It Gets Better" project.
