Carrie Fisher Will Return in Star Wars: Episode IX
Thanks to unused footage, Princess Leia's story continues.
It was bittersweet to see Carrie Fisher in The Last Jedi after her death, but Star Wars is hoping to give fans even more closure. The official Star Wars website confirms Fisher will appear as Leia Organa "using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
"We desperately loved Carrie Fisher," says director J.J. Abrams. "Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII."
The site also revealed that Mark Hamill will return as Luke Skywalker and Billy Dee Williams will return as Lando Calrissian.
The next Star Wars film is scheduled for release in December 2019.
