Well this isn't something we expected to see on the internet in 2023...

Pop singer Charli XCX and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Cynthia Lee Fontaine got into a heated exchange on Twitter. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

It all started when a Twitter account by the username @thatswiftbitch shared a screenshot of an Instagram story Charli posted from her secondary Instagram account (@360_brat) on June 26 where someone asked for her thoughts on Feed the Beast, the debut studio album from Charli's friend, musical peer, and frequent collaborator Kim Petras.

In the IG Story post, Charli admitted that she had yet to listen to the album, but she gave her thoughts on this point in Petras' currently sky-rocketing career, and cited how she found a recent Pitchfork review of Petras' album was, in her own words "interesting."

Pretty innocuous stuff, right?

Well, Cynthia Lee Fontaine, who is best known for competing on seasons 8 & 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race, didn't seem to think so, replying to @thatswiftbitch's tweet the next day and saying Charli's thoughts were "cringe."

"So haven’t heard it yet and she decided to make a comment base on someone’s review?" Fontaine wrote. "Cringe."

Always one to speak her truth and stick up for herself, Charli responded to Fontaine's tweet today, July 7, clarifying that her comments were not about the Pitchfork review or even Petras' album, but about her career so far and how she is navigating the music industry in 2023. An experience Charli herself knows very well, as she has been making a name for herself as a pop artist and songwriter since the early 2010s.

"No. I chose to comment not on another person's review but on my experience of Kim as an artist, whom I’ve collaborated with many times," Charli wrote back. "Artists are so much more than singular albums. Great artists generate culture and conversation that transcends music. I am giving my thoughts on Kim’s current position as an artist in 2023 through the lens of my own personal experiences. Don’t try with your fuck shit with me."

Fontaine then replied back to Charli, saying:

"Don’t you dare trying to teach me how artistry work. I’m aware how it works. But the music bussines and culture and interaction derives not just only on comments between colleagues, but also your own criteria, point of view and personal expertise. Do better ignorant!"

If you didn't expect to see a Charli XCX and Cynthia Lee Fontaine going back and forth on Twitter in this day and age, you aren't alone...

"charli xcx & cynthia lee fontaine beef was definitely not on my 2023 bingo card," one Twitter user commented.

"THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTINGGGG," wrote another.

At the time of writing, Charli has yet to respond or acknowledge Fontaine's follow-up tweet response.
