Why People Think DaBaby 'Dissed' JoJo Siwa In a New Song

JoJo Siwa and DaBaby

There's an explination for everything. Chill out.

JoJo Siwa has been living her life in 2021. She decided to come out to the world, allowed us to see her girlfriend, and is now in Canada filming a musical about her life. Truly living it up as the face of a billion-dollar brand. But this weekend, she began to trend as she was mentioned in a new track from DaBaby.

The track itself is called "Beatbox Freestyle" -- as such, it doesn't actually have a hook. DaBaby barrels through bars and references for about two minutes straight. But halfway through he let's loose the lyrics that got the internet going:

"Using big words like I'm T.I, don't wanna get me started nigga turn me up niggas gone see why," he raps. "Nigga you a bitch, JoJo Siwa." Wait, what?

The backlash on social media was swift: why would a grown man refer to a 17-year-old as a bitch? Particularly when it was completely unprovoked? That criticism gave way to another thread of thought: did he even do that?

This all requires a little bit of context. DaBaby's real name is Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, which could be JoJo for short. With this in mind, Siwa is pronounced similarly to "see why," making for a homophone. This sort of play on words is nothing new to rap. DaBaby took to Twitter to clear it all up.

"JoJo, my 3 year old princess is your number 1 fan," he wrote. "I bought her every product you have out. She think she you." We do want to point out, that's a lot of products.

"Don't let em trick you into thinking I'd ever have a problem with you," he continued. "My word play just went over their heads. All love on my end shawty, keep shining!"

Seems simple enough.

"I don't 'Siwa' they so mad either bay," DaBaby said, using the wordplay again in another tweet to show his intent.
