After seeing Jim Sturgess in Julie Taymor's musical Across the Universe, Robert Luketic (pictured right) had to have him for the lead in 21, the Kevin Spacey'produced nail-biter movie based on the true story of a group of MIT students who gamed the blackjack tables in Las Vegas. A native Londoner, Sturgess was awed by shooting on location in Sin City, 'but to spend a month there, we slowly started to lose our minds,' he admits. 'We were living in the casino we were filming in. One day I realized I hadn't left the building four days straight.'

Kylie Minogue loves Nick Cave. The pop princess's decision to connect with the brooding crooner for their 1996 dark duet, 'Where the Wild Roses Grow,' may seem like an odd one, but the pairing is actually part of Minogue's collaboration ethos. 'I love to absorb,' she says. 'I get on stage or record a song, and another version of myself comes out. I've had to work hard to be a multifaceted performer. You're not going to box me in.'

The two urinals are empty. It's a restroom in a quiet office building. This will be a quick in/out. I unzip and unleash. As if to taunt me, the door behind creaks open and a stranger sidles up to the urinal on my left. I should've used the stall. I always use the stall. I'm paranoid that anybody pissing beside me in a public restroom will magically, instantly know I'm gay and figure I'm cruising for sex. I'm not'it's just that closeted politicians have made me phobic.

Robin de Jesus steals the show every night in the hip-hop- and salsa-powered Broadway musical In the Heights, the hot new show about life, love and change in New York City's heavily Latino Washington Heights. His portrayal of the goofily adorable wannabe womanizer Sonny is so spot-on that you may not realize he's actually the same actor who played Michael, the teen drag queen in the 2003 cult film Camp, about Sondheim-obsessed kids at a summer theater program.

  • Entertainment Gender: The Final Frontier

Ten years ago, the then-editor in chief of this very magazine declared himself to be 'post-gay.' He was also soon, perhaps not coincidentally, declared 'post-editor.' So it's with a little hesitation (I have two mortgages) that I'm using this trans issue to declare myself 'post-gender.' From this day forward I'm not going to use the words masculine, feminine, or any of their derivations. They're meaningless, useless, and far too often meant as weapons rather than compliments.

I needed silicone breast forms, and I needed them that day. They were to be shot for this article (see page 95), and I assumed, in this age of online options galore, that I wouldn't need to scan the back of The Village Voice to find them. But indeed, that is how I discovered the Michael Salem Boutique: established in 1969, with the motto CROSS DRESSING TO THE WORLD.

Marlene Dietrich Marlene Dietrich in London (1965) Recorded 34 years after Morocco, the benchmark film that featured Dietrich seducing both sexes while garbed in top hat and tux, this cherished performance bends its genders strictly by association. Rocco Kayiatos, the man behind the San Francisco'based hip-hop sensation Katastrophe, has described himself as 'just a dude who makes music.' But oh, how words don't suffice: Katastrophe's manic beats and wicked lyrics are anything but commonplace, and his particular journey to manhood would humble even the bravest of superheroes. The 28-year-old rapper began the transition from female to male in 2002 and has been releasing his unique brand of 'emo-hop' albums ever since.
