In 1884, Charles Crozat Converse, a Pennsylvania attorney with a reformer's streak, perceived a gap in the English language and made a bold proposal for filling it: to add thon (that + one) as a substitute for he or she. Thon could be applied whenever it wasn't convenient or necessary to give the sex of the person being discussed. Converse gave this sentence as an example: 'If Mr. or Mrs. A comes to the courthouse on Monday next, I will be there to meet thon.'

  • Entertainment She's the Man

Who wears the pants? These women all did, on screens big and small, anyway -- and awards voters loved them for it. Linda Hunt: OK, she's not the most feminine in her everyday life, but still, Hunt was an Oscar winning trailblazer when she played a Chinese dwarf in The Year of Living Dangerously. Even more amazingly, Mel didn't beat her up. Tilda Swinton: As the eponymous Orlando, Swinton changes sex midway through the film, but for that first half she's all man and nothing short of luminous.

  • Entertainment Meet Heloise & the Savoir Faire

Heloise & the Savoir Faire's debut album, Trash, Rats and Microphones (Simian/Yep Roc Records), is a brash, electric trip down dance-rock memory lane, equally retro-disco-clash and modern no-holds-barred self-mockery. But the band's studio offering has nothing on their wild live performances, which made us feel like we'd stumbled into the world's coolest, queerest underground club -- circa 1978.

Her first Oscar nomination, for Michael Clayton, and upcoming movies with both David Fincher and the Coen brothers, are set to raise her profile further still. • Truman Says SNL Sizes Up Christian Siriano

You know you've achieved a level of celebrity when Saturday Night Live takes aim at you with its satire and  mockery. Christian Siriano probably didn't think he would walk away with $100,000 in prize money from winning Project Runway (oh, who are we kidding, he knew it all along) but who could imagine that SNL's Amy Poehler could channel Siriano's signature hairstyle, glasses and overuse of catch phrases with such accuracy and panache? Whether you love him or hate him, the sketch is sure to please!

FLICK: It's no secret that often the most heterosexual of films are by far the gayest. Not one to disappoint its gay constituents, Hollywood delivers Never Back Down to theaters this Friday, March 14. The mixed martial arts film stars Sean Faris (above) as the new kid in school, who is challenged by both Cam Gigandet for fighting supremacy and Baja Miller for right to the title of token beauty.
