Monday, November 3: This afternoon catch the sensational French pop singer Yelle in a free concert at the University of California at San Diego's Price Center. Yelle's debut album, Pop-Up, hit the U.S. this summer and quickly earned her a young hipster following. She opened for Mika during his 2007 European tour, and her hit single "Je Veux Te Voir" (translation: 'I Want to See You') was featured in the opening scene of last season's finale of Entourage.

In the GOLDEN AGE of HOLLYWOOD, icons were created. America's dreams and desires were writ large, creating a new kind of shared experience where, even amid our setbacks and defeats, anything seemed possible. Into this era of exuberance we cast the Out 100, our unashamedly subjective list of the gay men and women who moved culture -- ours and the culture at large -- over the past year. These artists, activists, athletes, and aesthetes embody triumph, daring, ingenuity, and integrity. With photography by GREG LOTUS, ROGER ERICKSON & LEE JENKINS

"In any moment of crisis, recession, war, national tragedy, etc., conventional wisdom holds that fashion gets more serious and sober. But if you look at the history of fashion, that idea has never really been borne out by facts. From a business standpoint, many designers will be forced to focus on classics and easy sells. But from a creative standpoint, chaos and collapse can lead to great things and new beginnings. I think a little bit of creative destruction can be healthy and bracing."

The day he watched Madonna jab a needle into Gerard Butler's bare ass, Tom Hardy realized the pop legend meant business. The 31-year-old British actor had been sitting on the side of the road in a Range Rover, preparing for a scene with Butler for Guy Ritchie's new gangster tale, RocknRolla, when Madonna showed up to administer an injection of vitamin B12 to the 300 star, who was ill at the time. 'It was her basically saying, 'Gerard, I don't want you fucking up my husband's film,' ' Hardy says, chuckling.

The seemingly interminable 2008 presidential campaign, which will finally come to an end Tuesday, had its first official stop in Iowa, where the caucuses were held on January 3 of this year. The national press corps had spent the previous few weeks camped out in that snowy state, and on the last night of 2007 a crowd of young reporters were celebrating New Year's Eve at a gay bar in the East Village -- that is, at The Garden, in the trendy East Village of Des Moines, Iowa.

The fashion blogosphere has been a bit flustered by the release of Tom Ford's new men's fur boot collection, partly because they are so outrageously expensive ($4,470 to $9,240) and secondly because, well, they're sort of tacky.

Toronto in springtime is a postcollegiate paradise. Pretty kids hang out in dark, pretty parks and yards, playing guitars or just lying in another's lap at 11:30 p.m. The wide streets are scrubbed and empty. The free hospitals sit quiet, their driveways floodlit and clear of ambulances; no one seems to be injured or ill. We're on our way to dinner when Bruce LaBruce points out that two 24-year-olds were shot and killed in an SUV in an affluent neighborhood the previous night, a crime almost unheard of in the gun-controlled city.
