For better or worse, the question of what it means to be Mika'a pop star whose rise in Europe and the U. K., in particular, has been nothing short of meteoric'has become inextricably bound up with what it means to be a gay artist in 2007. The musician, whose debut single, 'Grace Kelly,' earned him comparisons to Freddie Mercury, has made a fine art of dodging the question of whether he's gay, straight, or something in between, but the more he ducks and weaves, the more pertinent'and persistent'the question becomes. Is he being coy or calculating?

I remember sitting in the Unitarian church on 14th Street in Washington, D.C., several years ago, watching two gay friends exchange vows and thinking, This is going to be a spectacular breakup. From that pew, I could only envision hopelessly intertwined finances, a web of assets to disentangle, pets to put up for adoption, station wagons to sell, flatware sets to divide.

  • Truman Says Time Wars: Dior v. iPhone

Traditionally people have worn wristwatches to tell the time. But with the iPhone hitting the market June 29th, more and more people are making the jump from watch to phone.

“I never wear watches,” said Joe, an OUT editor. “My wrists are too skinny. I just look at my phone instead.”

Yet there are legions who will never turn to their phones for the time. “It’s easier to just go like this,” said Bill, another OUT editor who countered Joe's argument with a shake of his wrist and a glance at his watch. “Watches are the only jewelry I wear.”

With stateside pop culture gluttons all aflutter in recent weeks over who might be crowned the next American Idol, much of the rest of the west-leaning world had its eyes and ears keenly trained on an entirely different crooning competition, one pitting nation against nation, one with historic international import on a level Idol can only dream of, and one trumping it by a landslide for sheer gay spectacle.

Talk about being thrust into the gay media spotlight. Jake Silberman was invited to the GLAAD Media Awards this spring even though at the time he had yet to make his debut as gay teenage TV station intern Noah Mayer on As the World Turns. Silberman was thrilled to attend, although it was a little awkward.

'These films horrify me, and I really don't like them,' gay actress Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse, The L Word) says emphatically when asked how she feels about horror flicks. So it's surprising that she not only stars in Hostel Part II (as an American student living abroad who winds up in a hostel of horrors) but performs one of the scariest stunts in the film, suspended upside down in a torture chamber'naked, bound, and gagged.
