Pride in New York City is magical by anyone’s account: to be in the company of thousands of others marching down Fifth Avenue in celebration, unified, is awe-inspiring.
This year, celebrating Pride will take on a whole new meaning as New York welcomes WorldPride 2019. Pride symbolizes solidarity between the various segments of the LGBTQ+ community, while celebrating the differences that make us unique. In many ways, New York represents that same philosophy; people from all over the world, who are so vastly different, have come together to build a diverse and rich community, creating a culture that's unlike any other on the planet. From the endless opportunity and stimulation of New York City to the breathtaking views and world-class art scene of upstate, New York is offering visitors the opportunity to experience WorldPride 2019 in a destination that is almost as diverse as the community celebrating it.
In the spirit of diversity, we here at Out have asked two people to join us in sharing their very different experiences with exploring New York around Pride. Chris Mosier, the first openly transgender Olympic athlete, and Barry Hoy, a gay travel blogger, have given us their top recommendations for what to do when you're visiting New York this Pride. As we gear up for one of the most historic Pride seasons ever, we'll be sharing their experiences, as well as our own, to give you the best Pride info possible.
Being LGBTQ+ may shape us, but it is only part of us. For many of us, Pride means that being LGBTQ+ is more than a birthright. It is a privilege. We are gay, lesbian, gender-fluid, trans, bi, questioning, asexual, intersex, fem, butch, etc. And we are all waiting for you in New York.
