Hit musical Hamilton has won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Variety revealed.
This is the ninth musical ever to win the prestigious literary award.
Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the constantly sold-out Broadway show emerged as a potential contender for the Pulitzer when it opened Off-Broadway in February 2015, and became a favorite when it was transferred to Broadway in August 2015.
Its lyrics and music have received praise for being the first musical to use hip hop music in a period piece. Earlier this year, the Broadway production of Hamilton won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Hamilton is also slated to dominate in the upcoming Tony Awards nominations list, which will be announced on May 3rd.
