Mckesson has quickly become the most prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement. The newsletter and messaging system he helped devise provided protest strategy and news; his data analysis project, Mapping Police Violence, mined newspaper reports of officer-involved deaths nationwide; and his policy platform, Campaign Zero, brought him to meetings with the Clinton and Sanders presidential campaigns, and with U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. In February, Mckesson announced his candidacy for mayor of Baltimore.
