Queer Rapper Socalled Made a Gay Arthouse Porn in His Parents' House

His parents were cool with it though.

If you're not familiar with Canadian rapper and music producer, Socalled, you're likely to be very soon. And it's not because of his music.

The artist (whose real name is Joshua Dolgin) recently celebrated his 40th birthday by shooting a gay adult film. And he filmed it at his parents' house while they were out of town. Although he didn't tell his parents until after the fact, he says they were cool with it.

"But they're super cool about everything," Dolgin told Vice. "I mean, I think it's still sinking in with my dad, but he'll deal with it and I'm sure it'll be fine."

The project came about after he met gay porn star, River Wilson on Grindr. Wilson co-produced and starred in the film, alongside Valentin Braun. Together, they made The Housesitter, an arthouse erotica film about two men who hook up while one is house-sitting.

"I wanted this to be different," said Dolgin, a self-described film snob. "I mean, there's lots of hot images on Twitter that you can find very easily. But there's no montage, no music, no artistry. It's just some guys in the act. I wanted to make an indie porn, in the spirit of Toby Ross."

Dolgin admits the film is in part a reaction to turning 40. But he insists it's not a mid-life crisis.

"I don't think of this as a mid-life crisis movie, I see it as a mid-life celebration," he says. "I love sex and I love great photography and film, so this is a combination of the two. I'm blessed as an artist, because I have enough of a name that I can try new things, but I'm not so famous that I have limits. I mean, if I do something crazy, I'm not going to end up on TMZ. I just want to pursue my passions. This is part of that."

The Housesitter will premiere this month at Pop Montreal. Watch the trailer below:
