WATCH: MTV's True Life 'I Have a Trans Parent'

Trans representation continues on the popular television network.

MTV's True Life is not known for shying away from queer topics. Some of our favorite episodes include "I'm Genderqueer" and "I'm a Gay for Pay Pornstar." The newest episode, "I Have a Trans Parent" looks to be a much needed addition to the social commentary around trans issues.

The episode focuses on Kiara and Jeremy. Kiara, a young woman in the south, struggles to use gender appropriate pronouns with Kelden who wishes to be referred to as "Pops." Jeremy's parent, Jessica has been disowned by Jeremy's siblings and mother. Although Jeremy is soon leaving for the military, he and Jessica are determined to reunite their family.

This episode of True Life was developed by Look Different, MTV's campaign "to help drive a meaningful conversation on race, gender and LGBT bias and inspire audiences to take a stand." Although I Am Cait and Transparent have helped open the door for programming geared toward the trans community, there is a still an essential need for trans representation.
