Robbie Rogers has been outspoken about FIFA's decision to host the next two World Cups in Qatar and Russia, places with terrible track records for LGBT rights, and in the latest issue of GQ, the L.A. Galaxy soccer player discusses what the reaction has been since he published his article that blasted the organization. Although he says he hasn't heard from anyone directly at FIFA, he hopes to open a dialogue.
"I would hope that FIFA would be sensitive not only to gay rights but also women's rights and basic human rights, and they should pick host countries for the World Cup based on what's best for the competition--that's what the athletes and fans want."
He also seems to be urging players to make a personal decision that could challenge the host country's bans, saying "if a gay athlete is there and visible and able to wear something or speak out about an issue, that raises awareness."
