An Alabama mayor and a Florida state representative love jokes about killing gay people, apparently!
Nothing says Pride like elected politicians casually calling for the gays to get killed!
Mark Chambers is the mayor of Carbon Hill, Alabama. Last Friday, Chambers took to his very public Facebook page to complain about all of the "homosexuals," "transvestites," "baby killers," and "socialists" who he thinks are ruining this country (I don't know, sounds like a party to me...). In a subsequent comment on that post, the Alabama mayor suggested that the only way to "fix" things would be to "kill the problem out."
"We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics," Chambers wrote, per The Hill. "The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it's bad to say but without killing them out there's no way to fix it."
In a subsequent interview, he apparently defended what he'd written by claiming that his comments had been "taken out of context," as one does.
Chambers isn't the only elected official making headlines for treating anti-gay violence like a joke. Over in Florida, state Rep. Mike Hill has come under fire for chuckling at the idea that queers should be executed, the Pensacola News Journalreports. During a city hall event with Women for Responsible Legislation, an audience member suggested that gays should get the death penalty as punishment for their sexuality. Instead of a reasonable response like "No" or "What about not," Hill laughed and continued.
"Absurd to ask me to apologize for a statement that I did not make and that no one took seriously," Hill said. "This is a social media lynching!"
People elected these men! Again, I say, happy Pride!
