Kmarts across Australia are now selling $15 "Family Playsets" that come with either two moms, two dads, or a mom and a dad, as well as two children and a pet. Yay for more inclusive kid's toys!
No matter what kind of family you come from, you should be able to have dolls that look like you, and this is an important first step in making sure that all kids get to see themselves represented in the toys they play with.
According to the Star Observer, stores across Australia are quickly selling out of the dolls, with locations in Sydney and Melbourne being currently out of stock. The figures are still available online. If you order them there, however, you don't get to pick what kind of family you want. You might go in hoping for a gay or lesbian couple only to get stuck with straight dolls, as the website says "we cannot guarantee which design you will receive as products are selected at random for onine orders."
These inclusive family dolls come shortly after Mattel announced that they're going to start selling a gender-neutral line of dolls called the Creatable World Line. In speaking with Time, head of consumer insights at Mattel Monica Dreger said, "there were a couple of gender-creative kids who told us that they dreaded Christmas Day because they knew whatever they got under the Christmas tree, it wasn't made for them."
"This is the first doll that you can find under the tree and see is for them because it can be for anyone," she added.
As kids and families get more and more diverse, it's good to see the toys they play with trying to keep up (as long as you're white, as the dolls only come in one race for now). Hopefully the next step is to include some racial and body diversity.
