Man Arrested for Allegedly Murdering Date With Machete

Bronx man stands accused of using a machete to hack to death a Grindr hookup

The victim was described as “on the floor in pieces.”

A Bronx man has been accused of using a machete to hack to death a man he met on a Grindr hookup. Police on Sunday arrested Juan Alonso, 50, after his roommate came home to discover him blood-soaked and standing over the dismembered body of an unidentified body. Alonso remains in custody on multiple charges and is currently undergoing psychological evaluation.

"He was like so cut up," John Gonzalez, 35, the building super, said of the bloody scene to The Daily News, describing the victim as "on the floor in pieces."

Alonso reportedly met the victim on Grindr, the popular gay dating and hookup app. He was allegedly wearing a bra, panties, and dress when arrested, but was wrapped in a bloody sheet when escorted by police to an awaiting vehicle. No motive or explanation was given for the killing, but The New York Post quoted a police spokesman who said authorities are investigating whether there was a "dispute over not liking certain sex activities and it escalated."

"I asked him what happened when they were putting him in the squad car," Gonzales said "He said he was trying to defend himself. He said he was in the bed sleeping, and when he woke up, there was someone was on top of him trying to rape him."

Gonzalez went on to say that Alonso was a "good guy" and that "didn't look like the type of guy who would do something like that" but that "he was out of it" following the arrest. A long-time friend of Alonso, Cathy Lopez, 42, was also surprised by the news.

"He must have been pushed to the edge," Lopez told The Daily News. "Manny is not a violent guy."

Lopez went on to claim Alonso had told her he had been abused by previous roommates.

"I don't know how he met them," she went on. "Manny took roommates to pay the rent. And they turned on him. Someone can only take so much.
