Your Favorite Disney Villains Are Getting a Live Action Show

Poor unfortunate souls are about to fork over their cash for Disney’s new streaming service.

Poor unfortunate souls, be prepared: Disney has a new live-action series based on your favorite villains, which will go up on a new streaming service this fall called Disney+.

According toThe Hollywood Reporter, the new show is an adaptation of Serena Valentino's series Book of Enchantment (hopefully that's ... a working title), which digs into the lives of The Little Mermaid's Ursula, the Evil Queen from Snow White, Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent, Rapunzel's Mother Gothel, and Beauty and the Beast's titular monster. Quantico's Michael Seitzman will write the pilot and produce through Maniac Productions. That sound you hear is literally every Drag Race queen trying to find purple body paint while calling their agent to get an Ursula audition.

Disney villains have long been assumed to be coded as queer, although in some cases their LGBTQ+ significance is more overt -- we all know at this point that Ursula was based on the drag queen Divine, right? And Scar from The Lion King talks like a West Village daddy who entertains twinks in his sex dungeon -- be PrEPared, honey.

This isn't the first time Disney has explored the backstories of its most infamous villains: long-running fantasy drama Once Upon a Time featured incarnations of the Evil Queen, Ursula, Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, Hercules' Hades, and Aladdin's Jafar. For the younger set, the Disney Channel Descendents franchise followed the the teenage offspring of the legendary animated baddies grappling with their own evil impulses. And let's not forget that we still have Maleficent 2 and Emma Stone's Cruella De Ville movie to look forward to.

Book of Enchantment is the latest series greenlit for Disney+, whose other offerings will include a show centered around Marvel villain Loki, various shows set in the Star Wars universe, and a High School Musical reboot confusingly named High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Ready to cancel your Netflix subscription yet? Oh wait, you're probably using your mom's.
