In just-the-worst news, Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the potential candidates vying for the Republican Party nomination, has started a vile online petition calling for Americans to stand by Kim Davis.

Kim Davis, who was jailed yesterday for contempt of the law because she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has become a sort of martyr for the ridiculous movement where bigotry is veiled under the guise of religious freedom. Cruz has now added fuel to the fire and started a disgraceful petition calling for "lovers of liberty" to stand by Davis and her decision to disobey to law.

The full statement can be found here, excerpts from Cruz's statement are below.

"Today, judicial lawlessness crossed into judicial tyranny. Today, for the first time ever, the government arrested a Christian woman for living according to her faith. This is wrong. This is not America.

I stand with Kim Davis. Unequivocally. I stand with every American that the Obama Administration is trying to force to choose between honoring his or her faith or complying with a lawless court decision...

I call upon every Believer, every Constitutionalist, every lover of liberty to stand with Kim Davis. Stop the persecution now."

However, even in the face of such adversity and hate, love and equality can still prevail. Today, James Yates and William Smith were finally issued their marriage license, the first same-sex marriage license in Rowan County, Kentucky. The jubilant couple had made several attempts to obtain a marriage license, and each time a county clerk refused to serve them.

Despite the pervasive intolerance that still thrives in parts of the country, we're proven again that love can and will continue to win the fight against hate.
