IRIS, a documentary by Albert Maysles
Magnolia Pictures

Iris, Albert Maysles' last documentary, premieres in theaters April 29

The documentary Iris pairs Maysles (who recently passed away at 88) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades.

Naturally, this is more than a fashion film, it's a story about creativity and how, even at an advanced age, Iris remains free spirit who continues to inspire. As Rebekah Maysles, daughter of Albert and one of the producers of Iris explains:

"My father was always interested in making portraits of people, of them just being who they were. He really loved working with Iris. I would often stand aside and see him nudge her and say something sweet about how he really liked shooting her. I would catch him saying things to her like "were getting good stuff" -- or as she was walking back to her bedroom he'd give her the thumbs up. We were a small team and liked being in each other's company. Once we finished the final cut and all met together to watch I heard my dad say, "Iris let us know when something interesting comes up and I'll come and film it!' "

Iris opens in New York April 29 and Los Angeles May 1 and additional cities throughout May. Watch the trailer below:
