WATCH: Mizzou Students Talk About Importance of Spirit Day
The University of Missouri's student athletes are helping to stand up for LGBT youth.
Student athletes from the University of Missouri (Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano's alma mater, we should add) are "going purple" to take a stand against bullying with a new YouTube video, and it's all part of the annually recognized Spirit Day in support of LGBT youth.
Promoted by GLAAD, Spirit Day has been observed every year since 2010 during the month of October to raise awareness of the bullying many LGBT youth are very likely to face. The day also commemorates the young lives lost due to suicide as a result of bullying, with global participants encouraged to proudly wear the color purple.
"Because my friend was gay and got teased for it," said one of Mizzou's many student athletes in the video about why she supports Spirit Day.
"Because my friend is bisexual and he got bullied for it," said another.
